Road Trips From Dubai by Rental Car

Every well-known day trip from Dubai is on a paved road, so you do not need a 4x4. A normal rental car will take you to the mountains, the east coast and the oasis city of Al Ain and back in a day.

Where can I drive in a day?

Each of these is a comfortable day out. Start early, especially in the warmer months.

  • Hatta: about 90 minutes. Mountain scenery, the dam, kayaking and hiking trails.
  • Jebel Jais, Ras Al Khaimah: about two hours. The highest peak in the UAE, reached by a sweeping mountain road.
  • Fujairah: about 90 minutes to two hours. The east coast, beaches and the old fort.
  • Khor Fakkan: about 90 minutes. A beach town on the Gulf of Oman reached by a mountain highway with tunnels.
  • Al Ain: about 90 minutes. Oases, forts and the road up Jebel Hafeet.

Do I need to worry about the Oman border?

Yes, on the way to Hatta. Some roads in the east pass close to or through Omani territory. Rental insurance normally covers the UAE only, so set your navigation to a route that stays inside the country. If you want to drive into Oman, you need permission and extra insurance arranged with the rental company in advance.

Which car suits a road trip?

Comfort and boot space matter more than power. A compact SUV such as the Mitsubishi ASX is AED 650 per week and carries four people with bags. For a larger group, the seven-seat Mitsubishi Xpander is AED 850 per week. Check your mileage allowance, since a mountain day trip can exceed 350 km.

Road trips from Dubai: questions people ask

Do I need a 4x4 for a road trip from Dubai?

No. Hatta, Jebel Jais, Fujairah, Khor Fakkan and Al Ain are all reached on tarmac. A 4x4 is only needed for off-road driving, which rental insurance does not normally cover.

Can I take a rental car from Dubai to Oman?

Not without arranging it first. You need the rental company’s written permission and insurance valid in Oman. Ask before you book.

What is the best road trip from Dubai for one day?

Hatta for an easy mountain day, or Jebel Jais if you enjoy driving. Both are best between November and March.

Is there a mileage limit on rental cars for road trips?

Most rentals have a mileage allowance. Ask what yours is and what an extra kilometre costs, then plan your trip around it.
