SUV sizes explained
Compact crossovers such as the Nissan Kicks and Mitsubishi ASX seat five and park like a hatchback. They are the right size for a couple or a family of four with ordinary luggage. The Mitsubishi Outlander is a class larger, with a wider back seat and a deeper boot for longer trips.
Full-size SUVs are a different kind of vehicle. The Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade have three rows of seats and are built to carry a full group in comfort. The Suburban is the longest and keeps a large boot even with every seat in use.
The Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Vogue are five-seat luxury SUVs. You choose them for how they drive and how they feel inside, not for maximum seat count.
Do you need an SUV in Dubai?
You do not need one for the roads. Highways and city streets are smooth. People choose an SUV for the higher seating position, easier access for children and older passengers, and luggage space. Those are good reasons, especially on a family trip.
Rental SUVs are road vehicles. Standard rental agreements in the UAE do not cover off-road or desert driving, and damage from dune driving is normally excluded from insurance. If you want a desert experience, book a licensed desert safari and keep the rental car on tarmac.
What to confirm before you book an SUV
- Seat count and how much boot space is left with every seat in use.
- Whether your building or hotel car park has a height or length limit that affects full-size SUVs.
- That off-road use is excluded, so you know where the car can and cannot go.
