Car Rental for New Residents in Dubai
The rule that matters most for new arrivals is this: while you are on a visit or entry visa you can drive on an accepted foreign licence, but once your residence visa is issued you need a UAE driving licence. Plan your first months around that change.

Can I drive as soon as I arrive?
If you arrive on a visit or entry permit and hold a licence from a country the UAE accepts for visitors, you can rent and drive straight away. That window closes when your residence visa is stamped. From that point a foreign licence is no longer valid for you, even though the same licence is fine for a tourist.
How do I get a UAE licence?
Holders of licences from a list of approved countries can exchange them for a UAE licence without a driving test, usually in a single visit once they have an Emirates ID. People from other countries must open a file with a driving school, take lessons and pass the tests, which can take weeks or months.
If you are in the second group, budget for a period when you cannot drive at all. A car with a chauffeur, or a rental driven by a family member who already holds a UAE licence, covers the gap.
Which car should a new resident rent?
Most people start with an economy car on a monthly term while they find a home and decide whether to buy. The Nissan Sunny and Mitsubishi Attrage are both AED 1,400 per month at our published rate. Families tend to move up to a compact SUV once school runs begin.
